I blogged about this as well today at http://www.openbuddha.com/2010/08/22/zen-sex-scandal-goes-mainstream/.
It is deplorable.

From the New York Times, August 20, 2010: “Sooner or later, every traditional faith has to confront sexual impropriety by its spiritual leaders: extramarital sex, or sex with the wrong people (members of the congregation, minors) or, for supposedly celibate clergy, any sex at all. “But there are great differences in how religions handle these [...]

On another forum, someone recently posted that the Buddha’s guidelines about right livelihood are so strict that, accordingly, the only way one could feed oneself would be either to forage on wild plants or to beg. (I’m sorry I can’t site the passage verbatim or direct you to the particular scripture.) I’m sorry I can’t [...]

I really don’t – I’ve been trying to mention it online, but that’s mostly making me realize that I’m not as active online as I once was. (I’ve also mentioned it to the groups I participate in, but that’s not so many people, and many of them are rather less involved online than even I [...]

Does anyone have any suggestions how we could double or triple the number of people using this site? How do we make it better and more attractive?
We don’t have self-sustaining numbers yet and, as people know, building a new community is pretty hard.

Robert Aitken Roshi died last night. This is a sad moment for American Zen. He had a profound effect on people.

I have no suggestions, unfortunately. Maybe someone else will.

Does anyone have any recommendations for intelligent treatments of bioethics from a Buddhist perspective? There are a few books available (Damien Keown’s book comes to mind, though it looks like it might be much more about medical practice than research) but not much information about the books. I’m a neurobiologist, I work with animals. (Sea [...]

Hi Folks ,
Thanks for the invite to this online Sangha
My name is Darren and I’m from Brisbane in Australia . I don’t follow any set tradition but as I’ve only been discovered meditation a couple of years back and I’m still just getting the hang of just sitting. I’ve looked into a few different styles and a collected the odd book but yet to define what works for me besides the actual shutting up and getting some cushion time . I did do a few of the courses at the local Rigpa center but the rigidity of that tradition was just not working with the amount of questions I had , that for them was too far outside the box. I started with the Dharma punx books then into a little Jack Kornfield , Brad Warner and Daniel Ingram .I’ve just moved to one of the larger cities over here and found there is a large range of Zen Centers , planning to head down to the http://www.openway.org.au soon for the next info night.

Hi Al,
Thank you for starting this. I suspect there is a bit of ”wait and see” going on.
Anyway, maybe it would help to introduce ourselves. My name is Keith and I have been practicing in the Kwan Um School of Zen tradition since 1992. I live on the East Coast of the USA and practice at the New Haven Zen Center. One thing I miss about e-sangha was the chance to hear from traditions outside of Zen. Hopefully, this site will fill that gap. GL and thanks for practicing! -
